We received more entries from more brands and agencies than ever before, many thanks to all those who entered as we look forward to an exciting year for the awards and beyond.

Effie Canada Judging Process

Effie Canada has three rounds of judging, providing greater rigour and oversight from judges than any other awards program in Canada.

Round 1, which takes place in May, will involve over 100 judges participating from around Canada to decide which entries should progress to the final round.

The Final round, which takes place in June, sees 30 judges decide who wins gold, silver and bronze awards.

Then, in September, 10 of Canada’s most senior leaders will decide which of the Effie gold winners should take home the coveted Grand Effie.

The Canadian Creative Effectiveness Summit 2021

The winners will be announced through September leading up the Canadian Creative Effectiveness Summit. This virtual experience will allow viewers to learn the alchemy of effectiveness, and watch Effie Canada Grand Prix Live as the gold winning brand and agencies battle it out for the coveted Grand Effie.

The Canadian Rule of Effectivenes

New for 2021, Effie Canada has commissioned the world’s most respected authorities on advertising Effectiveness, Peter Field and Robert Brittain, to produce the ‘Canadian Effectiveness Rules’ report. A deep-dive into Effie Canada data to exclusively uncover the uniquely Canadian drivers of marketing effectiveness.

IKEA and Rethink win 2020 Grand Effie after live contest at the Canadian Effectiveness Summit

The Institute of Communication Agencies (ICA) announce a landmark research partnership with Peter Field that will uncover Canadian effectiveness drivers using  Effie Canada data.

Effie Canada Final Round Judging Complete Ahead of Creative Effectiveness Summit

The week of July 13th, 2020 saw the virtual gathering of some of the smartest brand, agency and academic marketers in Canada, as they dissected and discussed the most effective marketing that Canada has to offer.

The Effie Canada Final Round Jury, made up of a diverse mix leaders from brands and agencies including Bell Media, Chevrolet, Tangerine, GSK, Ogilvy, Leo Burnett, Sid Lee, Juniper Park/TBWA and many more, came together to decide gold, silver and bronze winners, which will be unveiled ahead of the brand new Canadian Creative Effectiveness Summit in the fall.

Last month we called on our industry to unite in postponing any further investment in award shows in 2020. It’s our belief that now is the time to focus our collective energy and creativity on the long-term health of the industry.
In line with this, the ICA, guided by the Effie Canada Steering Committee - made up of brand and agency leaders and headed by Arthur Fleischmann, Group CEO Ogilvy & john st, - took the decision to pause Effie Canada 2020.

Round One Judging Across Canada Complete

Effie Canada 2020 judging began in the last week of January in Toronto, with two fantastic sessions held at Cossette’s Liberty Village HQ.

Last week Effie Canada was hosted by Cossette in Vancouver and McCann in Montreal to wrap up an enthralling round one.

Thank you to the clients, agencies and academics who’ll help decide the finalists. There’s already been some amazing discussions, debates & deliberation, as the jury enjoyed & unpicked Canada’s most effective work.

Round two judging will take place in Toronto on March 26th, where the jury will decide who takes gold at the revamped Effie Canada Gala on June 5th.

Effie Canada showcases industry’s best work

The first-ever winners of Effie Canada were announced at its glittering gala event, hosted by the ICA June 6 at Liberty Grand Governor’s Ballroom.
Sid Lee took home the Grand Effie for its “You Should Play 6/49” work for the Lotto 6/49 brand with Loto-Québec.

Ogilvy Canada won the most awards on the night, with nine in total – two Gold, two Silver, and five Bronze.

Stellar Grand Prix Judges line-up for Effie Canada

Effie Canada, ahead of its inaugural awards night, has announced a spectacular line-up of judges for the ‘best of the best’ submissions.

The Effie Canada awards have been judged thoroughly across three cities and the Grand Prix jury takes this scrutiny to new levels.

Deciding on the winners of categories including “Sustained Success”,  “Healthcare”, “Youth Marketing” and “Retail” is a team of judges led by Chair Brent Nelsen, the Chief Strategy Officer of Leo Burnett.

Nelsen is joined by senior people from the agency and client worlds. David Allard, the Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung and Dom Caruso, the President and CEO of BBDO, are on the jury.

Also on judging panel are Matt Hassell. National Chief Creative Officer Forsman & Bodenfors; Melanie Hollingsworth, Director, Consumer Insights and Analytics, Canopy Growth; Kevin Johnston, CEO, MediaCom; Alison Leung, Vice President Marketing, WW (Weightwatchers); Andrew Saunders, Chief Revenue Officer, The Globe and Mail; and Matt Schoom-Kirsch, Chief Operating Officer, TAXI.

The Effie Canada awards, including the Grand Prix categories, will be presented at the Gala Dinner on June 6th.

Canada's CASSIES Join Global Effie Awards Network to Become Effie Canada

The CASSIES Awards, which have honored marketing ROI in Canada since 1993, are joining the global Effie Awards network to become Effie Canada.  The transformation of the CASSIES into Effie Canada is being led by the Institute of Communication Agencies (ICA), the professional business association representing Canada’s communication and advertising agencies, to better put Canadian marketing effectiveness on the global stage.
