AUSTRALIA

SUMMARY
This is a story about loyalty, risk and reward.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders [ATSI] feel a strong sense of exclusion from mainstream Australia: many have had their self-esteem and pride damaged by community attitudes and perceptions. They don’t believe their culture is fully understood or accepted and lack the confidence to make decisions affecting their long-term future. For these reasons and more the ADF has found it hard to recruit them despite a commitment to matching the diversity of the broader Australian community. This case history outlines how ATSI enlistments increased, dramatically increasing ATSI improving, and how a rise in applicant quality saw the recruitment ratio drop.
